All A Twitter – Automation Discussion

January 26th, 2010 by Gina

Twitter is a social networking and micro-blogging site that has gained massive worldwide popularity since it’s creation in 2006. Through Twitter users share everything from what they are doing at that moment to sharing news, blog updates, pictures, videos and even conversations. It did not take long for businesses to realize the marketing power of this simple yet versatile networking tool. Businesses worldwide are using Twitter to communicate with their clients, provide service help, keep their clients and potential clients updated on new products and services and releasing news about future products and services. What we will be looking at is automation on Twitter which is made possible through it’s application programming interface or API.Automatic followsMany automated tweet programs, such as TweetLater, give you the ability to automatically follow someone who follows you. Many Tweetsters find this to be simple Twitter etiquette. Automated tweet programs also give you the ability to stop following a person automatically if they stop following you. These are two of the acceptable uses of automated tweet programs.Automatic DM’s (direct messages)Automatic DM’s can be used to contact clients and customers about changes or upcoming events. If enough trust has been built between you and your client this can be acceptable. However, sending automatic DM’s to users simply to try and sell them something is often viewed as no more than spam and is usually quickly followed with an unfollow.Automatic DM’s can be used to send a message to someone who has just started following you. This is a more acceptable use of automatic DM’s, but it very much depends on what kind of message the fellow Tweetster receives as to whether you are branded as a spammer and rewarded with an unfollow. Attempting to sell someone a product immediately after a follow is generally seen as spam and can definitely have an adverse effect on your Twitter reputation.”Thanks for the follow! Buy my product at [URL]!”A softer approach is generally more acceptable, but how it is viewed is really determined by the URL you are attempting to send the person to. If the site you are attempting to send them to is attempting to sell them a product or service you may as well have used the method above. However, if you are attempting to send them to an informative blog or a news site in which you report on current events people are more inclined to find this as acceptable. However, some people say that if they are interested in you or what you are doing they will go to your profile and click on the website you have listed.”Thanks for the follow. If you would like to learn more about me please visit [URL].”The friendly approach is by far the most acceptable approach. In this approach you are not attempting to send the person to any website. In fact, by doing this you may inadvertently be sending them to your site. Because if people find you interesting and genuine, they likely will visit your profile page to learn more about you anyway. You are more likely to get a favorable response with this type of message and conversely more likely to generate more traffic to your site with this method.”Hey fellow Tweetster! Thanks for the follow. Looking forward to tweeting with you. Tweet you later!”Automatic tweetsJust like DM’s it is all about how you use this feature that will brand you as someone with valuable information and products, or just another spammer looking to get money from someone. Sending 2 or more tweets in the span of seconds will quickly get you branded as a spammer and you will find yourself being ignored or losing much of your following. If you do decide to use this feature then use it sparringly. Space your promotional tweets out by an hour or more and limit the amount of automated tweets you send out in a day.One thing you must keep in mind though, Twitter is not just a tool for promoting your products. Twitter, more than anything, is a tool that brands who you are. It is a sharing utility that can bring a personal touch to what is often a very impersonal method of advertising. Twitter helps to build trust in you and your company. Be genuine in your tweets, mix in some humor, share information that people will find relavant, informative and useful. People are very good at seeing past the tweet and knowing if a genuine person is behind that keyboard. If you are just spamming links you will find your Twitter experience to be a time waster rather than a productive tool for your business.Automated tweet programs are most useful in returning the favor when someone follows you, providing a quick hello and thank you for following and a way to stay informed of mentions when you are away. Used correctly it can increase your productivity and sales by quite a bit. Used incorrectly it can be just another nail in your businesses’ coffin.

How to Run a Twitter Marketing Campaign

January 26th, 2010 by Gina

Planning on how to run a Twitter marketing campaign requires, first, the assumption that you want to run a successful Twitter marketing campaign. You do NOT want to be viewed as a spammer or as an annoying pest.

Thus you must plan a marketing campaign that actually does little selling and more connecting. Why? Because this “laid-back” strategy on Twitter is more likely to get you loyal followers interested in what you have to offer.

Let’s look at an imaginary Twitter marketing campaign scenario:

You join Twitter and immediately start tweeting only about your products and services. Every time someone follows you, you send that person a DM (direct message) with a link to one of your sales pages. You use an application to automatically bring your blog feed into your Twitter account, and every one of your blog posts focuses solely on pushing your products and services.

How many people do you think will be interested in continuing to follow you and clicking on your links?

Twitter is effective for marketing purposes only when you realize it is NOT about sales but that it is about relationships.

A different imaginary Twitter marketing campaign scenario:

This time you join Twitter with a marketing strategy in place. You find and follow people who might be interested in what you have to offer but at this point you do NOT tell them about your products and services.

If you still want to send a DM when someone first follows you (which in my opinion is not necessary), make it a personal appreciation for connecting without pushing any of your sales page links. If you really want to include a link, make it to a free report.

In your general tweets you share links to worthwhile articles that relate to your products and services. These articles do not have to be your own; in fact, sometimes they should be to other people’s material.

Then every so often you throw in a tweet about a product or service of yours and include a link. But even in this case what you say can make a difference:

Instead of tweeting:

Buy my super-duper widget right now and you’ll make tons of money in 30 days. You can tweet:

Check out my new widget training program – it can help you attract more visitors to your website.

See how the second tweet is much less selling and much more sharing?

Now if you’ve been sharing worthwhile information connected to this topic, people following you will be more inclined to click on the link because these people are already conditioned to trust you. You’ve established this trust by providing these people with valuable free information on the topic.

In conclusion, take the perspective of your potential clientele/customers in order to run an effective Twitter marketing campaign: Not constantly tweeting about how great your products and services are; instead constantly tweeting to provide information that will help solve their problems.

And occasionally you can tweet that the products and services you’re selling are the solution to those problems.

Free Twitter Tools – Improve Your Tweeting

Free Twitter Tools – Improve Your Tweeting

I get about 20 messages a day on Twitter about how I can “grow my twitter following on autopilot”. The thing is, just about every person telling me this barely has any followers. The truth is there’s nothing you can really do to grow your following on autopilot, it just takes some time and effort. There are some free tools that can help however, as listed below.

TWEET LATER

Tweet Later is the most useful Twitter program I use by far. The interface is horrible, but you only have to configure your Twitter options once and then you’re done. After you’ve loaded your Twitter account into Tweet Later, go to “Accounts”, “List Accounts”, then “Edit”. You should have at least the following two options set-up.

Auto-follow: This will follow anyone who follows you automatically. This is essentially just common Twitter etiquette for marketers… if someone follows you, you follow them back. Most marketers on Twitter use this function, which is how you will get your followers; when you choose to follow someone and they have this option selected, they will automatically follow you back, and you now have a new follower. If you gain followers this way, it’s just nice to return the favour. Additionally, the more people you follow, the more likely someone is to follow you.

Auto-Welcome: I would also recommend checking this and using it. It serves as a great way to start up a conversation with new potential leads. Send a simple message… thank people for following you, and maybe ask them a question to get the conversation started. Do no pitch your business in your auto welcome message. I get this all the time everyday, and I just delete those messages automatically. Be prepared to be bombarded with such messages.

You will also see Auto-Unfollow here. I personally don’t use this (more on unfollowing under “Friend or Follow” below).

Tweet Later also allows you to… Tweet Later. Go to “Tweets”, then “New Tweet”. You can write in as many Tweets as you like and how them published to your account whenever you like. This way you don’t have to return to Twitter throughout the day to post something new. Simply set up a few new Tweets in the morning and then forget about it.

I personally don’t use any other Tweet Later functions, but browse around and see what suits you.

TWITTER FEED

Twitter feed will Tweet your blog’s RSS feed, i.e. every time you make a new blog post, you will automatically Tweet this to your followers. This is great because it gets traffic to your blog, and you don’t have to worry about remembering to Tweet it yourself.

TWEET DECK

Tweet Deck allows you to do everything you can do on Twitter, but without having to actually go online to your Twitter account. It has a different interface than Twitter, which some people may like. It also has an option to shorten your url’s (which Twitter does, but only after posting the Tweet), which can help you make longer Tweets. Beware though, Tweet Deck makes really loud annoying sounds periodically, so you might want to lower your volume.

HUITTER

Twitter recently changed the the interface in the “following” section. Previously you could immediately tell who you were following, but wasn’t following you back, but you now have to click the icon on the right of the screen to figure this out. Yes this seems effortless, but when you’re trying to unfollow 100 people at a time, it takes much longer with the new interface. Huitter allows you to unfollow everyone who isn’t unfollowing you with the click of a button (if you wish to keep following certain people you can specify this). If you wish to unfollow these people, it’s now a lot easier. For anyone who doesn’t know, once you hit the 2000 “following” mark, you must have followers within 10% of your following, i.e. if you’re following 2000 people, you must have 1800 or more followers. Hence, it becomes necessary to unfollow people who aren’t following you, or else you won’t be able to follow more people.

TWITTER BACKGROUNDS

I’m not speaking specifically about any tool or website here. Google “twitter backgrounds” and you’ll get several sites with free twitter backgrounds, some with some really really cool images. They’re a lot more interesting than the boring ones provided on Twitter, and they can serve to start up conversations too (I get asked about my Twitter background once in a while).

So there is your “automated” Twitter system. Add as many new followers per day and it won’t take too long to get to several thousand followers (I recommend following less than 400 new people a day, or else your account might get suspended). Just remember to unfollow people, be friendly, and don’t spam people with your business opportunity.

To find any of said applications, simply google the application title. For information on optimizing your Twitter profile for your business, see my article “How To Use Twitter For Your Business”.

Must Have Twitter Marketing Tools

January 23rd, 2010 by Gina

Must Have Twitter Marketing ToolsThe recent explosion of social media has created new opportunities for internet marketers. The one everyone is talking about is called Twitter. If you have never been on Twitter, or at least heard of Twitter you must have been living in a cave. The main stream media has been all over it lately. CNN for example has a huge presence on Twitter, with over 1.96 million followers as of the time of this article. Followers, by the way, are people that are interested in what you have to say and have decided to follow your tweets or updates. These tweets can be about anything you choose to write about, from what you are doing now to what you are going to do tomorrow. The can be about any and everything you want to say. You get a 140 characters to express yourself to the world. The quality of these tweets will have a direct impact on the rate at which you obtain and maintain followers. The more informative or entertaining the tweet, the more interesting it will be to your followers and the more likely it becomes that they will retweet the update. Retweet is when one or more of your followers think enough of your update to pass it along to their followers. You can compare retweeting to back-linking. It’s a great way to get your name out to the rest of the Twitter world and increase your followers. Now to the important part for IM people. Twitter has become one of best places to market on the net. Consider your followers like you would your email list. The larger the follower/email list the more opportunity you are going to have. It’s that simple. I’d like to tell you it’s more complicated. But, it’s not. It’s simple math. Market to more targeted people and get better results. There the secrets out. I feel better already.Let’s get to the nuts and bolts of building your follower base. The best way to gain targeted followers on twitter is to follow people interested in the niche you are marketing to. For example, if you’re marketing to NASCAR products, you would follow people interested in NASCAR. Simple, right. The problem comes in when they don’t follow you back. The rule is, about 30-50% of the people you follow will follow you back. So if you follow 1000 people, you can reasonably expect 300-500 people to follow you back. What about the people that don’t follow you back? You have to get rid of them by unfollowing them. Then go and follow more people. The basic rinse and repeat, that is fundamental in internet marketing. Two problems arise, first, this is very time consuming and second, twitter considers it spamming when you follow then unfollow and follow again the same people. They are very likely to suspend your account for this. Unless you have a miracle memory, you’ll never remember all the people that you have followed and unfollowed. This where having the right tool makes all the difference. You can automate the entire process with a tool called Hummingbird. It will allow you to follow targeted prospects with a couple clicks of your mouse and unfollow anyone that doesn’t follow you back. It will save you an enormous amount of time. It will handle multiple accounts, so you can market to several niche markets. The program also protects you, in that, it will not follow anyone you have unfollowed in the past. This will help prevent account suspensions. I personally use this program, after extensive research, I might add, and have found it to be the best program of it’s kind on the market. They are currently running a special offer. Use the discount code “RECESSION” and save $30.00. This program is worth many times what they charge. Review it here:ReviewAnother great time saver is called Tweetlater. This program is a life saver. It comes in two versions, a free and pro version, I strongly recommend the pro version. First let me tell you what both versions will do. First it will automatically send every new follow you get a welcome direct message. In this message you can welcome the new follower and tell them a little about what you do. A nice way to say, market to them. For example if you have ten accounts and average 400 new followers a day, that’s 4000 ads you send out everyday without lifting a finger. That’s a fabulous way to make passive income.Time savers are money savers. Another way this programs saves you time is that it will automatically unfollow anyone that unfollows you. Both versions will handle multiple accounts and let you schedule future tweets. You can sit down on a Monday and schedule all your tweets for the week. That’s a huge time saver. The Pro version also allows you to: * Schedule @replies and DMs * Schedule recurring tweets — Without them being repetitive! * Bulk upload & schedule tweets — Save time! * Run your own Twitter bots — Fully automate accounts! * Ping.fm integration — Feed Facebook & MySpace! * Manage DMs of all your Twitter accounts — Integrated console! * Automatically weed out SPAM — Boost your productivity! * And much moreThe pro version is the way for the serious IM pros to go. I use it and it makes my life much easier. I strongly recommend the Pro version. You can review both versions here: ReviewLook for twitter marketing tips on my blog: twitcashblogI look forward to your comments. Until then, Good Marketing

Twitter Wit: Brilliance in 140 Characters or Less

Review

“No matter your opinion of Twitter, you can enjoy some laughs in these 140-character (or fewer) communiques from hundreds of folks, compiled by techno-smartie Douglas.” (Sacramento Bee )”Douglas has collected 158 pages of proof that some of the millions of typists on Twitter are laugh-out-loud funny. A few are masters of compression, able to illuminate our common humanity in a couple of lines of text. String enough of them together in the right order, as Douglas has done, (more…)

twitter means business: how microblogging can help or hurt your company

Given the passion and high profiles of “Twitterverse” denizens, the service has evolved into a vital early-warning system for businesses seeking to stave off criticism, and as a way to build better relationships with cus (more…)

Twitter Marketing VS. List Building

January 21st, 2010 by Gina

Twitter Marketing is cool, it’s hot, but is it effective? For example, list building has been a primary activity for online marketers for years, but now newbies are getting confused. How does Twitter marketing help in list building? Can your followers be considered a list? If so, how effective is a Twitter list compared to an e-mail list?

Before web 2.0, there was only one kind of list. An e-mail list. Home marketers spent all their time trying to build their list, then market to that list with e-mail blasts and auto-responders. But now web 2.0 has changed the whole concept of list building. In addition to an e-mail list, we can reach out to friends on Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Skype, Myspace, and a plethora of other social sites.

So, are your followers, friends, subscribers etc. all part of your list? Personally, I think so. But they all have different value, and should all be treated differently. For example, when a prospect receives an e-mail they have to act on it. They either read it, delete it, or mark it as spam. But a tweet doesn’t require any action at all. As a matter of fact, most tweets go completely unnoticed. So how do Tweets compare to e-mails?

Case Study.

Last week I did a simple test. I promoted a webinar with only two methods, Twitter and an e-mail blast. I sent the blast to 9,167 people. I advertised the same event to 21,745 Twitter followers in 4 different accounts. Here are the results:

E-mail blast: Sent to 9,167 recipients, out of which 467 bounced, leaving a total of 8,700. It’s impossible to say how many of those actually got into peoples inboxes, as e-mail is such an imperfect science, but I do know that 155 people clicked on the link, a conversion of 1.8%, or 18 respondents out of a thousand.

Twitter marketing: 21,745 followers received the Tweet. There are no bounces in Twitter, the delivery is 100%. And I had the added benefit of my post being re-tweeted by five other people, giving my promotion a boost. I don’t know how many followers they had, or how many clicks they got, because they used the same link. 151 people clicked on the link delivered through Twitter. So if we ignore the re-tweets, that’s a conversion of .7 percent. or 7 respondents per thousand.

So… if this one, non-scientific, test turns out to be accurate moving forward, it appears that an e-mail list is about 2.5 times as powerful as a Twitter list. Or, viewed another way, you have to have 2.5 times as many Twitter followers to get the same results as an e-mail blast.

So here’s the kicker: which is easier to get, 1,000 e-mail opt-ins or 2,500 Twitter followers? I think the answer is obvious. Twitter followers are a lot easier to get. So am I going to throw out my e-mail list? Of course not. And I still make offers to all my Twitter followers that invite them to opt-in to my e-mail list. But if they never opt in, the list is valuable by itself.

The bottom line is simple: responsible marketers should use all possible means of spreading their message, and take advantage of free services, like Twitter, that allow us instant access to people all around the world.
